Description
About 18 species of these amazing large colourful parrots are native to tropical North and South America. Both male and female macaws look alike which is uncommon among vividly coloured birds.
Macaws are easily tamed; some can mimic sounds, but they can also shreeeeeek really loudly.
These birds are often exported illegally to supply the pet industry throughout the world. And that is contributing to the decline of population. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species now lists several macaws species as endangered or critically endangered.
